Manufacturing details of the Marlin Model 1888
by Scott Crawford - July 23, 2021
- A Lewis Hepburn design, this levergun had a shorter lever throw than the Model 1881
- Available from: 1888 to 1892
- Cartridges: .32-20, .38-40 and .44-40.
- Notes: The Model 1888 was developed in response to the popularity of Winchester and Colt's pistol-caliber repeating rifles and carbines. However, due to the adoption of Marlin's signature side eject models, the 1888 was condemned to only a two-year production run, with less than 5,000 made. Approximately 1,298 of these were chambered in .32-20 W.C.F. Blade and elevation adjustable sights, two-line address/1887 patent date barrel marking and smooth straight grip stock with crescent buttplate.
There were 2 rifles built in 1890 and 2 in 1892 thus ending the build cycle.
