360 Buckhammer

360 Buckhammer 200-GR Interlock RN

History

The .360 Buckhammer or also called the 360BHMR is a SAAMI-standardized straight-walled intermediate rifle cartridge developed by Remington Arms Company. The cartridge was designed for use in American states that have specific regulations for deer hunting with straight-walled centerfire cartridges.

At the 2023 SHOT Show in Las Vegas, Nevada, the .360 Buckhammer cartridge was introduced by Remington Arms. The Sporting Arms and Ammunition Manufacturers' Institute (SAAMI), the U.S. firearms and ammunition industry's technical standards-setting organization, announced the acceptance of the new cartridge and chamber standard on January 15, 2023.

The .360 Buckhammer cartridge offers a flatter trajectory and better terminal performance over current straight-wall cartridges while remaining compliant in most applicable states. .360 Buckhammer's parent case is the .30-30 Winchester, necked-up to use the same .358-caliber bullets as the .35 Remington and .35 Whelen.

.360 Buckhammer also addresses a rapidly growing market segment known as "straight-wall-cartridge-compliant" deer-hunting states. A growing number of states that previously restricted deer hunting to limited-range slug guns or muzzle-loading firearms are now allowing rifles chambered in straight-walled centerfire cartridges with a maximum case length of 1.8 in (46 mm).

Factory ammunition

As of this writing, Remington is the only company producing factory ammunition for this caliber. Its anticipated others will eventually pick this one up as it becomes more widely used in the field. It's currently available in a 180 or 200-grain Core-Lokt tipped round.

Final thoughts

I was fortunate enough to have Henry Rifles send me their new model H009G-360BH lever action to test these rounds out from Remington. I've chrono'd both the 180 & 200 grain rounds and found the advertised velocities to be bang on in this 20.0" barreled rifle. The accuracy/repeatability and trajectory were found to be very good between the ammo & rifle combination.

While I waited for some "published" hand loading data to become available I started hand loading some of my own to test. I used Hodgdon Powder company's LIL'GUN powder very successfully to almost exactly match the factory ammunition. My load data can be found below. During my work up I solely used the Hornady .35 caliber, Round Nose 200-grain Interlock bullets.
